Breakfast in Vienna - The 8 best breakfast places

Vienna not only offers art and culture, but also a variety of experiences for the palate. In addition to the classics Wiener Schnitzel and Tafelspitz, there is also a lively and enjoyable breakfast scene. During the week there is hardly any time for an extensive breakfast, but at the weekend or on days off, the Viennese love a varied breakfast. A typical Viennese breakfast consists of rolls, bread, cold cuts and cheese, butter, jam and, of course, coffee. But eggs, yoghurt, bacon, pancakes and smoothies have also found their way onto the plates of the Viennese.

Austrians, including the Viennese, have a special relationship with their bread. The classic ‘Schwarzbrot’, a mixed bread made from rye and wheat flour, is particularly popular. However, other types of bread can also be found on Viennese plates, as there are over 300 different types of bread in Austria, which differ depending on the type of grain, type of flour, processing technique or dough leavening agent. Rye bread, wholemeal bread, spelt bread and various types of white bread are also popular. Bread is either eaten without a spread as a side dish or with a spread or topping as the sole dish. Whether sausage, cheese, butter, egg, vegetable spread or sweet nut and chocolate creams, the choice of bread toppings is almost endless and offers something for every taste. A favourite topic of conversation among the Viennese is where to buy the best bread in Vienna. Opinions are divided on this topic, as there are many different bakeries and bakery shops in Vienna. Popular choices include Öfferl Brot, Jopseh Brot, Motto Brot or the bread from the ‘Der Mann’ bakery chain.

However, when you visit Vienna, we recommend that you not only eat bread, but also enjoy a hearty Viennese breakfast.

In our blog article, we present 8 varied breakfast venues that are located near our HOP ON HOP OFF bus stops, so that you can start your sightseeing tour immediately afterwards.

In addition to the aforementioned Motto Brot, there is also the Öfferl bakery. Originally from the Weinviertel in Lower Austria, the bakery now has 7 branches in Vienna. Two branches also have an integrated bistro, which serves all-day breakfasts with products from the Weinviertel manufactory and partner businesses.
